Prevention and Control of Seasonal Influenza with Vaccines

Fall 2017

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) has made available their recommendations for the prevention and control of seasonal influenza with vaccines – United States, 2017-2018 Flu Season

Routine annual influenza vaccination for all persons aged ≥6 months who do not have contraindications has been recommended by CDC and CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) since 2010. It is also recommended that emphasis should be placed on vaccination of high-risk groups and their contacts and caregivers

According to ACIP these are the timing recommendations for the Influenza Vaccination.

  • Optimally, vaccination should occur before onset of influenza activity in the community.
  • Vaccination should be offered by end of October, if possible.
  • Vaccination should be offered as long as influenza viruses are circulating and unexpired vaccine is available.
  • Children aged 6 months through 8 years who require 2 doses should receive their first dose as soon as possible after vaccine becomes available, and the second dose ≥4 weeks later.
